About Herman Trunk Jr.
Herman Trunk Jr. (1894-1963) was an American painter active in the modernist movement of the 1920s and 1930s. He exhibited alongside famous artists like Charles Demuth, John Marin, Stuart Davis, Joseph Stella, Joseph Pollet, Edward Hopper, Arthur Dove, and others. Studying with Henry Lee McFee and John French Sloan in the 1920s, Trunk focused on cubism, creating experimental watercolors of sailboats, still lifes, and farm scenes. His work in the 1930s and 1940s moved towards geometric and architectural themes, with many later paintings anticipating the "Pop Art" vogue of the 1960s. Currently, his contributions to figurative abstract art are being recovered by scholars and critics.
